Digital Rights Division

At Miaan, we recognize that basic human rights, including freedom of expression, privacy, and freedom of association, are deeply connected to digital rights. Our Digital Rights Division is dedicated to protecting and advancing these rights for Iranians through policy advocacy and digital security initiatives. In Iran, online censorship, surveillance, network disruptions, and government harassment pose significant threats to digital freedom. We implement projects aimed at mitigating these threats and empowering advocates and technologists to promote digital rights.

We focus on supporting marginalized communities in Iran who are most affected by the government’s restrictive policies. Led by Amir Rashidi, a renowned expert on Iranian state-sponsored hackers and digital hygiene, our team includes Iranian researchers, lawyers, journalists, and activists. We conduct regular digital security audits and provide digital hygiene training to at-risk civil society groups and communities.

Miaan also partners with the Center for Digital Resilience to offer threat monitoring, rapid response, digital hygiene checks, and other security services to civil society members. Additionally, we run Filterwatch, a research hub providing up-to-date analysis on Iranian internet policies and infrastructure developments. Through our Iran After Dark platform, we equip Iranian internet users with resources to access and communicate information freely during internet disruptions and shutdowns.
