ITU Must Press Iran on Internet Shutdowns, Not Enable Them
In this statement to Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin of ITU, Miaan Group and 15 other civil society organizations express deep concern over the ITU’s ruling on Iran during its October 2023 meeting, supporting Iran’s claim that Starlink terminals were used illegally. The decision undermines global Internet access and disregards Iran’s restrictive policies that violate digital rights. The groups urge the ITU to ensure transparency, hold Iran accountable for Internet shutdowns, and engage with civil society to protect free access to information.
