Abraah Water Rights initiative

Iran is grappling with a severe crisis driven by water scarcity, which affects life, health, culture, food security, and freedom from discrimination. With one of the highest water depletion rates globally, Iran faces a predicted 25% decline in surface water runoff by 2030, disproportionately impacting ethnic minority communities. For instance, Lake Urmia, a cultural and economic center for the Turkish community, has shrunk by 90% since 1985, and Khuzestan, home to a large Arab population, experienced a 30% decline in rainfall in 2018.

The Abraah Water Rights Initiative works with international bodies and civil society to raising awareness about access to water issues and develop educational resources for Iranian. Abraah primary research on impact of access to water for marginalized groups including ethnic minorities and women. Additionally, Abrah provides capacity building resources for civil society by translating international resources into Persian. Follow our Instagram page for updates and information
